Maarten Baas

Private commission for Julie and John Thornton, Austin, Texas.

To complete the site specific "Smoke Dining Room" for the Thonton's historic Mediterranean Revival house (1915) Maarten Baas and his studio created paneling from Pennsylvanian white oak in a traditional, ‘‘cope and stick’' style of joinery. After the paneling was created it was disassembled, burned and then reinstalled.

Maarten Baas has completed commissions for some of the largest and most high profile private collections in the world. His work for public institutions includes The Groninger Museum (NL) where Maarten selected and burned pieces from their existing collection. Works for commercial entities include The Gramercy Park Hotel in New York who commissioned Maarten to create works for the rooms and public spaces in the hotel including a billiard table and a new original collection for Dom Ruinart to celebrate the champagne maker's 50th anniversary.
