Riffing on her new, elaborately constructed textiles, Layers, created in collaboration with Maharam, Jongerius constructs five one-off domestic "Interior Fragments", incorporating into these multi-media works not only first prototypes of the fabric, but also traditional Dutch woodwork, cast bronze, and large-scale ceramics.
Working with an expert craftsman in wood, Jongerius created this intricately carved sideboard, which features turned posts alluding to objects previously designed by her in other materials. Assembled in two parts, Softcupboard is adorned with loose-hanging drawer covers and soft walls made of one-off prototypes of Layers textiles, which she developed over three years in collaboration with Maharam. Included are two Quilted Vases, which are soft upholstered replicas of Jongeriuss Big White Pot (produced in earthenware by Koninkliijke Tichelaar Makkum), a group of B-Service dinner service cups, bowls and plates (designed in 1998, and also produced by Tichelaar Makkum), and five Bonanza jugs, each incised with different imagery from the Layers fabrics, and each supporting an ornamental cast bronze stopper.
