Where There's Smoke...Joy Shelving Unit (Castiglioni)

Maarten Baas

For "Where There's Smoke...Joy Shelving Unit" Maarten Baas reworked a Joy Shelving Shelving Unit (1989) by Achille Castiglioni. MoMa Curator Paola Antonelli wrote of Castiglioni "design is one of the highest expressions of twentieth-century creativity, and Achille Castiglioni (1918-2002) is one of its greatest masters." This piece is a very significant burn. Baas allowed the fire to carve away large portions of the original work emphasizing its sculptural quality.

This unique piece is signed “BAAS” with a metal identification plaque printed and embossed with the following text: ‘Where There’s Smoke, created by Maarten Baas for Moss NY, 01/12/05, unique piece’.
