In ‘To Be Continued’, Carretero explores issues of control and perfection in serial production. Using the repetitive actions existing within the production process as a tool, ironically, for highlighting differentiation as opposed to regularity, multiple casts in a polyurethane composite, variously coloured, are layered one on top of the next, creating a long series of ‘slices’ which cause these remarkable works to gradually mutate - in a sense, imperfectly ‘designing’ themselves. The first ‘slice’ is made using a rigid mould; all subsequent ‘slices’ are made with flexible moulds, which, along with use of an expanding, foamy composite made from a polyurethane resin specifically created for this purpose, result in the obvious variations in each ‘slice’. Like a game of “Pass the Secret”, each successive ‘slice’ is cast from the mutant previous ‘slice’; each layer influences the design of the next section of the work.
