Clay Furniture addresses the issue of form-giving in industrial design, revealing, literally, the designer's 'hand' in this intimate process, today normally concealed through the use of a computer (but there, none-the-less). "Clay" is a reaction to mass produced manufactured design that has dominated 20th C. Design. With "Clay Furniture" no moulds are used in the production, making each piece unique, each table has a surface that differs from the next, each chair has a different back never to be repeated, and so on.
The clay that is used appears to be that of a clay or putty used by a child, however, the actual clay used is an industrial clay which is quite durable. This industrial clay is hand-modeled on top on Baas-designed metal 'skeletons' giving the pieces added structural support. The surface is then painted with colored lacquer.
Following its release in 2006 Maarten has continued to expand the series branching out into new areas such as the most recent addition a bed unveiled at the Salone del Mobile 2009.
"Clay Furniture" has been exhibited at the Salone del Mobile, Milan Italy; Cibone, Tokyo, Japan; Design Miami; Design Miami/ Basel; Moss New York; Moss Gallery Los Angeles; Design Museum Tank, London, England; Groninger Museum, Netherlands; Designhuis Museum, Eindhoven, NL; Stedelijk Museum 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands; the 21_21 Design Sight Museum in the Netherlands, and the Design Museum Holon, Israel.
