COMMISSIONS
The artist-designers represented by Moss have created important works for private collectors, residential commissions as well as those for commercial and public institutions. By engaging directly with a specific context, these dynamic and enriching works place the artistic vision of the artists in direct dialogue with the vision of the patron. Many of our artists remain open to this dialogue.

Maarten Baas- The original 25 pieces for the 2005 "Where There's Smoke..." exhibition at Moss New York were commissioned works by the gallery. Numerous private and public commissions for work from the series has followed. Moss continued the tradition by commissioning three new pieces in honor of Maarten's award for Designer of the Year at Design Miami/2009. The Groninger Museum asked Maarten to create new "Smoke" pieces from their existing collection of vintage furniture and then purchased the piece for their permanent collection. The Zuiderzee Museum in the Netherlands recently had Maarten to create a new video clock based on his "Real Time" series. He has worked on corporate commissions as well, contributing several works to Ian Schrager's Gramercy Park Hotel and a series of limited edition pieces for the French champagne house La Maison Ruinart, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its 1959 Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs. The designer has completed numerous commissions for private residences from his "Where There's Smoke..." series as well as his "Clay Furniture" series. Recent work includes "The Shell" cabinet for Design Miami and site specific one-off furniture pieces for the collection of Amalia Dayan & Adam Lindemann.

Fernando and Humberto Campana- During the summer of 2007 the Campana Brothers were commissioned to create an installation in the John Madejski Garden at the Victoria and Albert Museum to mark the V&A’s 150th anniversary. The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum commissioned a chair for their permanent collection from the Campanas' "TransPlastic" series in 2008. They created scenography for runway show 'Glamour Factory, the Autumn / Winter 2010/11 collection of French fashion house, Viktor & Rolf. In a 2005 project with Swarovski, Studio Job created the "Roses on the Vine" lamp for the 2005 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards, held at the New York Public Library. Recent commissions includes a collection for a bank of three hand-painted objects and one hand-painted service in ceramic and two floor lamps in cast bronze.

Richard Woods- Installation artist Richard Woods has completed extensive site specific commissioned work over the course of his career. Richard's installations involve cloaking architectual elements in comic book style pattern in bold colors. The application of block printed patterns which Richard refers to as interventions cover floors, walls, furniture, doors, and/or exteriors building facades etc. create heavy contrasts to the comparatively staid environments they occupy.

Important commissioned installations include work for the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK, the Lever House, New York, MCM company, Seoul, South Korea, the Residence Du Parc, Turin, Italy, collector Adam Lindemann, New York, NY, Look Ahead Housing, Bracknell, UK, AHMM Architects, London, UK, MK Forty Towers with DRMM Architects, UK. Hella Jongerius- Dutch designer Hella Jongerius created a site-specific work commissioned by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York comprised of needle-punch embroidered blankets. The motifs blankets were inspired by the designs found on historic samples in the Cooper Hewitt's existing collection. Addition clients Jongerius has made commissioned work for includes Camper shoes, Ikea, Sweden, Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufacterer, Geramany, and Royal Tichelaar Makkum, NL.

Patrick Jouin- Much of Patrick Jouin's commissioned work is product design such as the Vélib Bike Rental System in Paris commissioned by French Government. In addition to this work Jouin also accepts commissions for architectual work and has completed two restaurants for Alain Ducasse, salons for Van Cleef & Arpels on the place Vendôme, suites for the W Hotel and a 32,000 sq ft YTL House in Malaysia. Currently he is working on a cultural center in Shanghai and a a set of silverware for Puiforcat.

Peter Marigold- Peter Marigold is a young emerging UK designer. Peter has recently accepted a commission for a large table to seat over 40 people at a private home in the United States. The table is based on his recent body of work called the “Palindrome Series”, a collection of symmetrical pieces of furniture, each comprised of half mould and half cast. The forms, textures and details of one side are mirrored on the other. The wood is first assembled as a mold and the composite casting material is layered inside. Once the casting material is set, the wooden mold is disassembled, turned inside out and reassembled to form the opposing side. The two sides, mold and cast, are then joined together using mould-making fasteners.

Tord Boontje- Dutch designer Tord Boontje, known for his iconic Blossom Chandelier, has been commissioned to create lighting for the Delano Hotel in Miami, British Airways, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (with Alexander McQueen). Like his Blossom Chandelier the projects for the Delano Hotel and the Victoria and Albert Museum combined the use of Swarovski crystal with his signature natural motifs. Perhaps his most ambitious project came from a mosque in Abu Dhabi who asked the Boontje to design a chandelier for the mosque's interior. The monumental work comprised of a complex series of connected "blossoms" mirrors the geometry of the building's interior dome by inverting it and thereby giving it the visual effect of "completing" the sphere. Boontje was careful in the composition of the piece to accentuate, not compete, with the mosque's interior architecture giving the work a great deal of transparency. The commission for British Airways installed in the first class lounge in Terminal One at Heathrow recalls his Garland light where the piece focuses on shadows produced from his cut metal floral patterns as much as the actual light itself. In 2004 Boontje was commissioned to create a public work for the façade of a new development on Keane Street in Covent Garden, London. Recognizing the absence of foliage on the street Boontje chose to install a 65ft long "Floral Ribbon" in copper running the horizontal length of the building. The sculptural flowers were laser cut from a flat sheet of copper and then composed into a complex twisting vine.

Michael Anastassiades- In a curated project entitled "Sitooteries" for English Heritage, an organization protecting and promoting culture in the UK, Anastassiades was commissioned along with twelve other notable artists and designers such as Julian Opie and Thomas Heatherwick to create sitooteries or "places to sit out in". Michael Anastassiades designed a tall, curved oak lamp post which will only illuminate when those around it are completely silent. Adjacent to the lamp post is a fountain and stool Michael designed as an "oasis of clam" where he once again calls upon the visitor's participation. The fountain will overflow with water allowing it to be repumped back into the fountain but only if someone is seated on the stool. Other projects include a bronze chandelier for the Greek Orthodox Aghia Sophia Cathedral in London, lighting for the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, fashion show sets for Hussein Chalayan and special projects with artists Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby.
