Palindrome Table

Peter Marigold

Emerging British artist, Peter Marigold, has opened his studio up to commissioned work from his "Palindrome Series". The series is a collection of symmetrical pieces of furniture, each comprised of half mould and half cast. The forms, textures and details of one side are mirrored on the other. The wood is first assembled as a mould and the composite casting material is layered inside. Once the casting material is set, the wooden mould is disassembled, turned inside out and reassembled to form the opposing side. The two sides, mould and cast, are then joined together using mould-making fasteners. By incorporating the original mould into the piece – an act which defies the normal usage of a mould, which is of course to enable duplication, each work becomes a unique, one-off object. Recently the artist was commissioned by a private collector to create a "Palindrome" table similar to the one seen here but in a monumental scale. The table, measuring 12 meters in length (over 39'), is to sit in an outdoor space under a loggia on a Long Island estate. For this special piece, the artist used variations of his traditional natural wood and white gypsum/acrylic composite to make them suitable for use outdoors in even the harshest of climates.

Please feel free to inquire about commissioning a one-off "Palindrome" table, chair, cabinet, or bench.
