Philippe Starck for Flos

2010
316L stainless steel, glass plates and Organic Light Emitting Diode
Base: 6.5" x 6.5" (16,5 x 16,5 cm)
overall height varies from 13” to 21.5” (33 to 54,5 cm)
light-emitting glass shade measures 14.5” x 18.5” (36,8 x 47 cm)

Light Photon made its debut in April, 2010 at the Milan Salone del Mobile. Although it is customary for new introductions to then go through a lengthy development phase prior to being available in the market, Flos has arranged for a limited quantity of hand-made prototypes to be made available now exclusively through Moss. Delivery of these prototypes will take approximately 12-14 weeks.

The Light Photon is equipped with an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) head, and is the largest and purest example of a fixture employing this new technology built to date. OLED light sources are composed of a complex stack of thin molecular layers of semiconductor organic materials sandwiched between two electrodes that produce light when an electric current is applied. This new technology enables larger light emitting surfaces than traditional, inorganic LEDs, which are limited to only small surface areas. Additionally, OLED sources do not heat when illuminated, and because they are made from organic materials, they can be directly recycled with existing waste recycling chains, making them among the most environmentally friendly light sources available today.

The small cross on the metal base allows the light to be turned on and off (by placing the finger completely over the cross) or dimmed (by holding the finger slightly above the cross for several seconds).

The light-emitting rectangular glass shade can be rotated from a down position, where the glass is at a 45 degree angle to the base, up to a flat position where the glass forms a horizontal plane parallel to the base.
