info@moss-gallery.comClay Furniture address the issue of form-giving in industrial design, revealing, literally, the designer's 'hand' in this intimate process, today normally concealed through the use of a computer (but there, none-the-less). "Clay" is a reaction to mass produced manufactured design that has dominated 20th C. Design. With "Clay Furniture" no moulds are used in the production, making each piece unique, each table has a surface that differs from the next, each chair has a different back never to be repeated, and so on.
The clay that is used appears to be that of a clay or putty used by a child, however, the actual clay used is an industrial clay which is quite durable. This industrial clay is hand-modeled on top on Baas-designed metal 'skeletons' giving the pieces added structural support. The surface is then painted with colored lacquer.
